Protect Your Outdoor Plumbing
Water expands when it freezes, and it does not care what is around it. Every autumn the same things fail across Halton Hills, Georgetown and Waterdown: hose bibs left connected to a garden hose, irrigation lines that were not blown out, outdoor kitchen supply that could not be drained. The damage is done in December and discovered in April, usually as water in a wall the first time the bib is turned on.
Common Outdoor Plumbing Myths
“Frost-free hose bibs cannot freeze.”
They can, if a hose is left attached. The hose traps water in the section the bib is designed to drain, and that is exactly where it splits. Disconnect the hose every autumn — it is the single cheapest piece of plumbing maintenance there is.
“My sump pump is fine, it ran last year.”
Pumps fail sitting still, not just running. Seized impellers, stuck floats and dead check valves all happen quietly during the months a pump is idle. Test it before the season, not during it.
“A battery backup is overkill.”
The storms that fill your sump are the storms that take your power out. A sump pump with no backup is protection that switches itself off exactly when you need it. If your basement is finished, this is worth a conversation.
“Irrigation lines will drain themselves.”
They will not. Water sits in the low points and freezes there. Blowing the lines out before winter is a small job that prevents a spring full of leaks.

Test it under load
A sump pump gets tested with water, not by looking at it. If it will not do the job in March, we would rather find out in March.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I shut off my outdoor taps for winter?
Before the first hard frost, which in this part of Ontario means getting it done through October. Disconnect the hose, shut off the interior valve if you have one, and drain the bib.
How often should a sump pump be tested?
At least once a year, before spring melt, and again before storm season if your basement is finished. Pour water into the pit and confirm it runs, discharges and shuts off cleanly.
How long does a sump pump last?
Often around a decade, but it depends heavily on how hard it works. A pump running constantly in a high water table has a much shorter life than one that runs a few times a year.
Do I need a backwater valve?
It is worth considering if your basement is finished or you have had municipal sewer backup in the area. We will tell you honestly whether your situation warrants one.
