In a renovation, plumbing is the constraint everything else bends around. Where the drain can go determines where the toilet goes. Venting decides whether an island sink is straightforward or a problem. Getting a plumber involved when the layout is still on paper saves far more than it costs — because the expensive version of this conversation happens after the floor is open.
Common Renovation Plumbing Myths
“We can move the toilet anywhere.”
Drains need fall and venting. Moving a toilet a few feet is often simple; moving it across the room can mean opening the floor and rerouting the stack. Worth knowing before the tile is ordered, not after.
“The plumber comes in at the end.”
Plumbing runs in two stages, and the first one happens before the walls close. Book the rough-in late and the whole schedule behind it slips.
“An island sink is the same as any other sink.”
It is not. There is no wall to vent into, so it needs a specific venting solution to drain properly and stay code-compliant. Very doable — just not the same job.
“We’ll sort the permit later.”
Renovation plumbing that moves drains or adds fixtures generally needs a permit and inspection. Doing it properly protects your resale and your insurance. Doing it quietly does neither.
